chapter 16

5. What do you think of current movie rating system? should it be changed? why or why not? i do not think it should. i think the rating system is fine the way it is. people read the system a lot and i hear very little complaints about the current system. i like they way they rate movies and i think it is very helpful. and to be honest i do not know what they would do different. so i think they should leave it the way it is and have the same system.

6. should the fairness doctrine be revived? i think for the most part it the fairness doctrine is fine the way it is. i think the set it so it is very fair. i know some people complain about it and the only thing i can think of would be changing little things to make more people happy with it. but for the most part i hear very little people complain and think its fine, but if they wanted to change little things i think that would be okay.

4. should the united states have a federal shield law to protect reporters? i think this would be a very good idea. some reporters can have a dangerous job and could get hurt easily. i think a lot of reporters would feel a lot safer and could do there job the way they wanted to and not have to worry a lot. i feel protection is a good idea for reporters and i know the reporters would probably like it better.

chapter 15

3. Can you think of an issue that media industry and academic researchers could study together? they could study cultural studies and study different culturals with both academic and media industries. Also they could study audience studies. see the different audiences for both media industry and academic reserchers. they could also study economy studies. I dont think this would be the best one to study but it could be one they talked about.

1. What are your main concerns or criticisms about the state of media studies at your college or university?
i dont have a lot of concerns or criticisms about the state of media studies, i dont like that media studies isnt big here at school. i feel media studies should be a bigger deal than it is. i feel people should know more about media studies than they do. A lot of people on campus here dont know a whole lot about media studies and they should know more about it.

2. one charge that has been leveled against a lot of media research-both the effects and the cultural models is that is has very little impact on changing our media institutions? i would agree with this. i think cultural models and the efects do have very little impacted becuase a lot of people do not know a whole lot about them so its harder for it to impact and change the media institution.

chapter 13

2. Do you read international news? why or why not? I used to not read international news mostly becuase my parents or friends would tell me about it before me actually reading it. lately i have been reading it more because of all the disasters going on in the world. I read it more now to stay informed and i used to think it wasnt imporatant because it didnt effect me. but now i realize it is very important to read and to keep myself updated with international new.

1. Are you exposed to popular culture from other countries? why or why not? give some examples.
I think we are because we learn so much about other countries in classes and buy the products we trade with them. Also in the u.s we have people and students here from other countries and we can learn from them and there way of doing things. I think everyone is always a little exposed to popluar culture just buy the way we have been brought up. it may be in classes, the different porducts or even a new friend from another country.

3. What steps can reporters and editors take to cover media ownership issues in a better way?
I think the first thing they can do is compramize better. Figure out the main issues at hand and talk to out. make sure it is fair for everyone. I think if they did this you would see a way better improvement and it would seem a lot more fair. this i think is the best way for reporter and editors to cover media ownership issues. And i think it will show great improvement in their work as well.

chapter 12

3. What steps can reporters and editors take to monitor PR agents who manipulate the news media?
the first thing they can do is try and get the real story before the editors try and tell a wrong story. They can also post a new article saying the real story if the wrong one gets printed first. but the real way to stop PR agents from turning a wrong story around is you have to beat them to the story, because it is so competitive, and you want the right story so you have to beat them to it so the PR agents don't print the wrong story first.

1. what do you think of when you hear the term public relations? what images come to mind? where did these impressions come form? i think of people who gossip in articles like us weekly, and other magazine to catch people attention. the image that comes to mind is some one not telling the right story. the impressions come from people talking about them manipulating the story and turning things around the way they want to sell their story. these impressions come from everyone.

4. Can and should the hostile relationship between the journalism and PR be mended?
i do not know if it can be mended because i do not know that much about this industry but i think that it should. i think it could help out the industry and find fewer problems, but also it would take away from the competition and that is what can keep things interesting. so i can go either way, i do not think it ever will mend but if it does it has a good chance of being good and a good chance of being bad.

chapter 11

2. why are so many people critical of advertising? a lot of people are critical of advertising because they dont like people pushing them to buy something. but advertising can be a good thing it helps the companies products get their name out there but some people dont like they way companies advertise. i think advertising is can be a really great thing for a company.

4. should advertising aimed at childern be regulated? i personally do not think it should. i think its good that they have advertising for little kids unregulated. it makes kids happy to see new toys out and the companies that do not regulate make so much money. i think advertising for little kids should stay the way it is, it makes kids happy and it helps companies have more sucess.

7. is advertising at odds with the idea of democracy why or why not?
i really do not think it is. i feel like advertsing does not affect democracy. i feel like adverstsing helps out businesses and it can be a little forward and some people do not like it but i think it is a good thing. i probably would not buy half the stuff i did without advertsing and i love more stuff i buy. for me advertsing helps me see the new things coming out and would be lost with out.

chapter ten

6. would you read a book on an ipod or a kindle? why or why not? i do not think i would read a book on an  ipod or kindle for many reasons. one reason is that im more of a visual person and i need to hold the book and it read it. also i am not a big fan of "touch screen" so i think it would a lot more difficult than it should be. i love the traditional book and i love buying new books, i could just never see myself using and ipod or a kindle to read my books.

1. what are the earliest recollections of books? do you read for pleaseure? if yes, what kinds of books do you enjoy? why?
i do like reading for pleasure i read all kinds of book, form girly to fun to even harry potter. i like these books one becasue more make you keep reading, they keep me interseaded. i also love books in series. i love to keep reading about it like harry potter, it was sad to see it end but i loved reading all of them as they came out.

2. what can the book industry do better to ensure that we are not overwhelmed by a visual and electronic culture? i really dont think the book industry has to do much. because everyone i talk to loves the classic book. they love going to barns and nobles and getting coffee and sitting in a comfortable chair and reading a nice book. i really would not worry because people love the book more than the new electronic stuff they are coming out with.

Chapter Nine

1. What are your earliest recollections of magazines? which magazines do you read regularly? my earliest recollections were teen magazines like "seventeen" "J-14" pre teen magazines. me and my friends use to read those kinds of magazines and thinking we were so cool. the only celebrities in those were in disnesy channel. the magazine i read most regularly is probably "cosmo" i would have to say its one of my favorite magazines to read. i like it becasue it has great ads and it also tells a story of someone famous every month, and beacuse its girly.

7. do you think the internet will eventually displace magazines? why or why not? I think there is a chance they could. everything is becoming interent based now. also i have heard many people say that magazines are getting expensive to buy so some might resort to the internet since the internet is free. I think if this were to happen it would be a while from now, but i think there is a very good chance people will start using the internet to replace magazines.

4. if you were the marketing director of your favorite magazine, how would you increase circulation? one thing i would try and do which might not be possible but i would try and produce it every two weeks instead of every month. i feel like you would make a lot more money and custmers would be happier, but like i sad i'm sure if that would be possible since i know it takes time to produce a magazine. but i think thats the one thing i would change to help circulation. i think this would increase circulation since a lot girls wait every month for there favorite magazine.

Chapter Eight

3. Discuss wheather newspaper chains are ultimatley good or bad for the future of journalism? I think newspaper chains are good for the future of journalism, it gives competition and it gives more varity. I can't really see it being a bad thing.

5. Will blogs and other internet news services eventually replace newsplace newspapers? I think they could eventually since we are becoming more advanced. But i can't see it totally replacing the newspaper since of the older generation doesnt know everything about blogs.

2. Why do you think people aren't reading U.S daily newspapers as frequently as they once did? I think its because everybody is finding out news on the internet, like twitter and facebook, and blogs. the internet is getting information faster than the newspaper these day so everyone reads online.

chapter Seven

3. How often do you go to the movie theaters today? how often do you play DVDS on a television at home or watch movies on a computer? which do you prefer?
i do not go to the movies a whole lot because it is so expensive, i do however go the the dollar theater sometimes when they play good movies. I watch DVDs at home a lot, i prefer this more because it saves me lots of money.

2. Do you remember seeing a movie you were not allowed to see? Discuss the experience.
I did see a movie i wasn't allowed to see, and my mom got pretty mad, which is weird looking back because we watch this movie together all the time now. its crazy to think i got in trouble for watching it, when now i watch it all the time.

4. if you were a hollywood film producer or executive, what kinds of films would you like to see made? what changes would you make in what we see today?
i would like to action films and i would also like to see funny movies, i think that would be really cool. i wouldn't change a whole lot because i like what i see in movies today but i guess i would change how predictable movies are today.

Chapter Six

1. how many cable channels do you watch regularly? what programs do you watch? what attracts you to a certain channel? I watch about three cable channels regularly. I watch ESPN, the office, gossip girl, and friends mostly. Funny shows, and shows i like is what attracts  me to certain channels.

4. CNN and MTV have changed our society as well as the global culture. Have these changes been positive or negative? I think the changes are both positive and negative. The people who watch the shows on both of these channels it is a positive, but there is still a lot of people who just want to hear music and they miss that. so i would say that would be a negative, but all and all i considered it to be both.

5. Do you think DBS is an equal competitor to cable? why or why not? I do not think it is an equal competitor, i think DBS has a bigger advantage.  people want more than regular cable these days, now there is so much more out there i do not think it is an equal competitor.

Chapter Five

2. How much television do you watch today? which programs do you try to watch regularly? what attracts you to your favorite programs?
I do not watch much television, but I do watch my weekly shows. I like watching gossip girl, and sport center, the office and friends. I try and watch gossip girl every Monday and i watch sport center when there is a big game, or just to watch highlights. I like funny shows like the office you can just watch it and laugh, and i like sport center because i love watching sports.

1. Describe your earliest memories of watching television. what was your favorite show? which if any shows did your family watch together? were there shows that you were not allowed to watch?
When i was younger I watched a lot of cartoons. I watched a lot of cartoons with my brother even if he was older, for awhile we watched the same shows. My family did not watch a lot of shows together until me and my brother got older, so now my family watches a lot of show together now that were older. There was not much shows that i could not watch, it was just understood that we watch shows that were meant for kids.

5. How do you think new technologies will change TV viewing habits? I think new technologies such as DVR recording changes the viewing habits. Now that people can pre-record it lets them watch there favorite shows whenever they want instead of just the time it airs. People do not have to wait and watch commercials because with DVR you can fast forward and rewind. It changes the way people watch and view television today.

Chapter 4

3. If you could own and manage a commerical radio station what format would you choose and why?
I would choose the format that has three different formats into one. I would have some varity. the reason for this is so it attracts many people instead of just a select few. I would just have one format I would have a couple and make that into a format.

5. How might radio be used to improve social and political discussion in the united states?
Since most people use the radio on the way to work or on the way home, it could help the use of political and social discussion. Using the radio could get the word out faster and since so many people use the radio. Also you can now call in to radio stations and discuss what your thoughts are. So radio has improved social and political dicussion by getting to people faster and by having the people discuss what they feel.

4. If you ran a noncommercial radio station in your area what services would you provide that are not being met by commerical format radio?
If I ran a noncommercial radio station I would play a wide range of songs, so everyone would listen. Also I would have the deejay talk more during the down times, so it would not have an awkward pauses. I would provide more of a people choice. You can call in and select a song you want. I would make it more about the people and less about commericals.

Chapter Three

1. Who was your first favorite group or singer? How old were you at the time? what was important to you about this music?

I can not remember who my favorite singer or group was because I liked so many, but one for sure I know I like was the old Brittany Spears. I was probably in early elementary school when her first CD came out. What was important to me the most was this new singer that was so popular and everyone loved her well all the girls did. At the time her music was clean so my parents let me listen to her. She had a great reputation and a great voice. She really spoke out to young girls since she was so young when she started.

2. If you ran a noncommercial campus radio station, what kind of music would you play and why?

I think I would play all types of music, since it would be on campus everyone likes different stuff, and it would be hard to please everyone. So I would play country, rock, rap but I would make sure it was clean. I would play rock, and pop music. I think that would be the best solution so everyone would be happy, and if they did not like what was playing they could just wait to hear something they liked, instead of having the same type of music playing over and over.

3. Do you think the Internet as a technology helps or hurts musical artists? Why do so many contemporary musical performers differ in their opinions about the Internet?

I think Internet hurts more music groups than helps them. People now can download music illegally and that makes the music group out of money. Also before the Internet, if you wanted music you had to go buy the CD, and even if you wanted just one song and you still had to buy the CD. Now with Itunes you can go and look up one song and buy just that song instead of buying the whole CD. So really I think musical groups make less money now than back than. I think contemporary musical performers differ from this because if your nobody you can get discovered on the Internet, like so many new artists have done. Like Justin Beaver was discovered on You Tube. So its very different for contemporary artists using the Internet than popular artists.

Chapter One and Two

1. I grew up listening to popular boy bands, like backstreet boys, LFO, 98 degrees, ect. I think the reason my taste changed in music is because the worlds taste in music has changed. once was popular then is not popular now. a band is only popular for so long and then new and improved artist become popular and take their spots on the radio. When they stop playing them on the radio the taste of everyone's music changed. I do think my interest in music back then and now shaped my identity. Because everyone listens to different music and it can really show who you are as a person, and how different you are from someone else.

3. This may sound funny but I think the new Ipod touches are/can be harmful to kids. One because if young kids have them they spend less time being active, and they only focus on the new games and the new technologies. Also I feel like they interact with less children. Also another thing you have to keep in mind is that with the new Ipod touches kids have access to the internet at such an early age, and I wouldn't want my kid on the internet at such an early age. I do not think they should be removed from circulation or even band, because I do not think it is harmful enough to be band or removed.

5. I think these forms of postmodern form of communication can harm more traditional and native cultures because it could be offensive to there culture. It can also be awkward for there culture since they do not know how to use it since they are more traditional. They look at the world different and they might think bad of us since we use  so many forms of communication. It might harm them because they are not use to using so many forms of communication and it might confuse them.

Chapter two

2. I am most excited about the new and fast improving internet they are starting to make it a lot easier to use. They are doing this because of all the new technology equipment. what's troubling about it is every time they come out with new and improved items they make you want to buy them and most the time they are very expansive. Also once you get the new product you want there is another product bigger and better on its way. Also as technology advances my parents generation gets harder to understand it.

1. My first encounter with the internet was when I was little we started doing using it in middle school for many different things. I thought it was amazing that you could look anything up or even chat with your friends online and email others. But looking back that is all I have known so it is probably not as amazing as when my parents look back and think if they could have the internet when i started I think they would appreciate it more. It was very different than the first time I used a cell phone, i thought i was so cool when i had my first one. I thought I was so old.

4. I do not think virtual communities are genuine communities because virtual means fake, and they are not real. I do not think they are genuine because I feel they can get hacked into and i do feel like if anyone can get in to them they are not very genuine, and they are not real.
